Once again, changes in diet may help. Be sure to include: Fresh fruit and vegetables. Dried fruit. Wholegrain cereals and linseed/flaxseed. Beans, lentils and pulses. During pregnancy you need to be very careful with consumption of any herbs or homeopathic remedies. Some home remedies may be helpful, such olive oil or warm lemon water. Also, pay attention to the relaxation of your pelvic floor when you feel the urge to go. Allow yourself time to sit and relax. Improving constipation – what you can do. There are four main ways of dealing with constipation. There is no one diet that suits everyone and it is not uncommon for people to find that they cannot tolerate certain foods. This does not often amount to an allergy but rather an intolerance. Keeping a food diary can sometimes help. Increasing your fibre intake can sometimes (but not always) be effective in constipation. Fibre is not digested and absorbed in the intestines, so the stools are softer and more bulky, and it is easier for the bowel muscles to push them along. There are two kinds of fibre: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre, as its name suggests, dissolves in water; insoluble fibre does not. Soluble fibre forms a gel whilst insoluble fibres absorb water and form bulk. Both forms of fibre ferment and produce gas, which can cause bloating and/or pain. Insoluble fibre is found in whole wheat, whole grains, wheat bran, corn bran, seeds, nuts, barley, couscous, brown rice, bulgur, courgettes, celery, broccoli, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, dark leafy vegetables, raisins, grapes, fruit, and root vegetable skins. Soluble fibre is found in oatmeal, oat cereal, lentils, apples, oranges, pears, oat bran, strawberries, nuts, flax seeds, beans, dried peas, blueberries, psyllium, cucumbers, celery and carrots. If you suddenly increase the amount of fibre you eat, you may notice wind and bloating, so increase the amount slowly, over several weeks, to allow your gut to adjust to the new diet. Some people find increasing their fibre causes more tummy pain, bloating and wind. A high- fibre diet is healthy for most people, but if you are elderly and not very mobile it can make the constipation worse. So check with your doctor. Some people find that high- fibre worsens bloating without improving constipation. In the past, doctors advised drinking lots of water to help constipation. Research has now shown this will not help (Prescriber 2. Also, if you have a medical condition, such as heart failure, it may not be advisable to take too much fluid. Check with your doctor. Changing patterns of shift work can upset the rhythm of your bowels. Similarly, it is quite common to be constipated at the beginning of a foreign holiday, especially if you have crossed time zones and are also eating foods that are different from your normal diet. So don’t ignore it when your body tells you that you’re due to have your bowels open. And give yourself enough time for an undisturbed visit to the lavatory, preferably half an hour after breakfast. So, when you sit on the lavatory, prop your feet up on a footstool. This increases the likelihood of piles or painful anal cracks (anal fissure), and can be dangerous if you have high blood pressure. If nothing has happened after 1. Dozens of laxatives are available from pharmacies without a prescription, so if you have tried changing your diet and it hasn’t worked you may be tempted to try one. Before doing so, see your doctor. Keep the dosage to the minimum that is effective. They have to be taken with plenty of water, and it can be several days before they have an effect. They are the best type of laxative for long- term use. Osmotic laxatives retain fluid in the bowel, which then softens the faeces. They may take several days to work. Examples of this type of laxative are: milk of magnesia, which is magnesium hydroxide; Epsom salts or Andrews Liver salts, which are magnesium sulphate; and laxatives containing polyethylene glycol. If you have kidney or heart failure problems talk to your doctor before taking this type of laxative, as they may not be suitable. Stimulant laxatives (such as senna, bisacodyl) work by increasing contractions of the bowel, and so they can cause tummy cramps. The effect occurs within a few hours, so they are taken at night to produce a morning bowel action. Some experts think that if you use these regularly for years, the contractions of the large bowel (colon) may eventually become weakened, making the problem much worse than before, so this type of laxative is inadvisable for long- term use. Glycerol suppositories that you insert into the back passage (rectum) act as a stimulant because they are slightly irritant to the bowel. Lactulose and lactitol are types of sugars that the body cannot digest, so they remain in the bowel where they act partly like fibre and partly like an osmotic laxative. They often cause bloating, wind and tummy cramps and have to be taken regularly for up to 3 days before having an effect. Faecal softeners, such as sodium ducosate or . Sodium ducosate encourages water into the faeces, whereas liquid paraffin probably acts by lining the bowel with a film of oil that stops water being absorbed into the body from the faeces. Liquid paraffin is also a mild stimulant. Faecal incontinence (soiling) can occur with this type of laxative. These laxatives are not suitable for long- term use. Biofeedback is one possibility. Some people, most often young women, have a problem coordinating the muscles of the bowel, anus and pelvic floor. For example, when they are trying to pass faeces, they contract the anus muscle instead of relaxing it. Special feedback training can overcome the problem. This treatment is available in only a few specialist hospitals, and is reserved for people with a severe constipation problem. This is not a laxative but works by increasing the muscle contractions of the bowel and decreasing the time it takes for faeces to move along the colon. It is licensed only for use in women in whom laxatives have not worked. It is normally only suggested for use by a hospital specialist for severe cases of constipation. It can have side effects – headache (in 1. Prescriber 2. 01. Written by: Mr Andrew Ramwell. Edited by: Mr Andrew Ramwell. Last updated. Thursday, November 7th 2. Introduction. Constipation is a change in your normal bowel movements, going less frequently than you usually do, passing hard, dry stools, or straining when you defecate. Constipation can be acute (coming on suddenly but infrequently) or chronic (long lasting). Most people have constipation at some point. Often dietary changes can relieve the problem. However, constipation can also be a sign of illness, some people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) experience alternating constipation and diarrhea, for example. Some people go every day, or even 3 times a day; others may go only 3 times a week. Some healthy people may have soft or near- runny stools, while others have firm stools but no trouble passing them. Signs and Symptoms. Fewer than 3 bowel movements a week. Sudden decrease in the number of bowel movements. Stools harder than usual. Bowel still feels full after bowel movement. Feeling bloated. Straining during bowel movements Many times constipation can be treated with over- the- counter remedies. Causes. Constipation is most often caused by a low- fiber diet, lack of exercise, dehydration, or delay in going to the bathroom when you have the urge to defecate. Stress and travel can also contribute to constipation or other changes in bowel habits. Other times, diseases of the bowel (such as irritable bowel syndrome), pregnancy, certain medical conditions (like an underactive thyroid or cystic fibrosis), mental health problems (such as depression), neurological diseases, metabolic disorders, or medications may cause constipation. More serious causes, like colon cancer, are not common. More women than men seek help for constipation, suggesting that a hormonal imbalance may play a role. Among the medications that can cause constipation are: Some pain medications: Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab)Hydromorphone (Dilaudid)Meperidine (Demerol)Oxycodone (Percocet, Oxycontin) Anticonvulsants: Phenytoin (Dilantin)Valproic acid (Depakote) Antacids: Gaviscon. Maalox. Mylanta. Tums Tricyclic antidepressants: Amitriptyline (Elavil)Doxepin (Sinequan)Imipramine (Tofranil) Antihistamines: Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)Cetirizine (Zyrtec) Analgesics: Acetaminophen. Aspirin. Non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs Dopaminergic medications. Constipation in children often occurs if they hold back bowel movements when they are not ready for toilet training, or are afraid of it. Diagnosis. Your doctor will perform a physical examination, which may include a rectal exam, and a pelvic exam if you are a woman. The doctor will check your medications to make sure they are not causing constipation and may run several tests to diagnose underlying illness. The following tests may help diagnose the cause of constipation: Blood tests. Stool studies. X- rays of the abdomen. Upper GI series (to look at the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestines)Barium enema (to look at the colon)Proctosigmoidoscopy (an examination of the lower bowel) or, depending on the symptoms, a colonoscopy (an examination of the entire colon from the inside) Preventive Care. Avoiding constipation is easier than treating it but involves the same lifestyle measures. Eat lots of fiber. Drink plenty of fluids each day (at least 8 glasses of water per day). Exercise regularly. Go to the bathroom when you have the urge. Your doctor may suggest other alternatives. Treatment Approach. Most mild cases of acute constipation can be treated with over- the- counter laxatives. However, these medications are only designed for short- term use. You can often prevent or treat chronic constipation with a combination of changes in your diet (like eating more fiber), drinking more water, and getting enough exercise. Your health care provider may talk with you about your bowel habits. For example, if you consistently delay going to the bathroom when you feel the urge, you could make constipation worse. Your doctor may ask you to use a laxative or stool softener or suggest a bulk- forming agent, such as psyllium, bran, or methylcellulose. In addition, certain herbs may help promote bowel activity. Use laxative herbs with caution because, like medications, they may become less effective if you use them constantly. Studies support the use of biofeedback for obstructive constipation. One study found that obstructive constipation was corrected in 7. Lifestyle. Getting enough fiber in your diet (2. Vegetables, fresh fruits (especially dried fruits) and whole grains, including wheat and bran, or oatmeal cereals, are excellent sources of fiber. To reap the benefits of fiber, you must drink plenty of fluids (especially water) to help pass the stool. If adding more fiber to your diet causes gas or bloating, try adding fiber gradually. Regular exercise also helps maintain good bowel movements. Even if you are in a wheelchair or bed, you can change position frequently and perform abdominal contraction exercises and leg raises. A physical therapist can recommend a program of exercises that's right for you. Additional tips include: Take time to eat, breathe slowly and deeply, and chew food thoroughly. Cut back on high- sugar, high- fat foods. Drink plenty of liquids. Try a fiber supplement, such as Metamucil or Citrucel. Be sure to drink plenty of water, or these supplements could make constipation worse. Medications. Your doctor may recommend a laxative to relieve temporary constipation. However, you should not use laxatives to treat chronic constipation. Many laxatives are available, both over the counter and by prescription. Laxatives can interact with a number of medications, so talk to your doctor before taking one if you also take other medications. Bulk- forming laxatives. Often prescribed first for constipation, they can work as quickly as 1. They swell in the intestines, softening the stool and making it easier to pass. Bulk- forming laxatives are made of indigestible fiber and are safe for long- term use, but you must take them with enough water or they can cause obstructions in the intestines. In some people they may cause bloating and abdominal pain. Bulk- forming laxatives include those made from psyllium (Metamucil, Fiberall), methylcellulose (Citrucel), and polycarbophil (Fiber. Con). Stimulant laxatives. Work by causing the muscles in the intestines to contract, moving the stool along. They are designed for short- term use and can cause dehydration and problems with the body's electrolyte balance. Stimulant laxatives include Dulcolax, Correctol, Ex- Lax, castor oil, Senna, and Senokot. Osmotic laxatives. Increase the amount of water in your intestines, making stool softer. They can be quick acting, but they can cause loss of fluids and electrolytes. Osmotic laxatives include lactulose (Cephulac), available by prescription, and polyethelyne glycol (Mira. LAX); and saline laxatives, such as magnesium citrate and milk of magnesia. Stool softeners. Often recommended after surgery, these laxatives make the stool softer. They are generally used in combination with stimulant laxatives, and can take 3 days to work. Lubricant laxatives. Coat the stool and help it move through the intestine. The most common lubricant laxative is mineral oil. Mineral oil can have side effects; if it is accidentally aspirated (breathed in), it can cause pneumonia. Suppositories. Suppositories, which are inserted into the rectum, may make it easier to pass hard stools (glycerin suppositories) or they can be a stimulant laxative that is absorbed into the body (Dulcolax suppositories). Enemas. Saline enemas work like osmotic laxatives, while mineral oil enemas work like lubricant laxatives. You should not use enemas on a regular basis; they can cause electrolyte imbalances. Tegaserod (Zelnorm). A prescription drug used to treat constipation in people with IBS. Because of an increased risk of cardiac problems (including heart attack and stroke), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restricts the use of Zelnorm to people who have found other treatments unsafe or ineffective. Never give laxatives or enemas to children unless instructed by your doctor. People with any kind of bowel obstruction, abdominal inflammation, or kidney or heart failure should never take over- the- counter laxatives without talking to their physician. Nutrition and Dietary Supplements. Adding more fiber to your diet and drinking adequate water usually helps relieve constipation. It is important to take any fiber supplement with plenty of water to avoid intestinal obstruction. Psyllium is a kind of soluble fiber used as a bulk- forming laxative in products such as Metamucil. It comes from a shrub- like herb called Plantago ovata that grows worldwide. Each plant can produce up to 1. Psyllium can help relieve both constipation and diarrhea. It is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and other intestinal problems. When psyllium husk comes in contact with water, it swells and forms a gelatin- like mass that helps transport stool through the intestinal tract. Glucomannan is another type of soluble fiber, that comes from the root of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac). Several studies have indicated it may be helpful for constipation. Probiotics, or . Common types of probiotics include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria, and Sacchromyces boulardi. In one study, daily intake of yogurt- containing galacto- oligosaccharides, prunes, and linseed reduced the severity of constipation in elderly subjects with mild constipation. Another study found that constipation symptoms improved after subjects ate probiotic enriched artichokes compared to subjects who ate . People who are severely immunocompromised should use caution when taking probiotics. Speak with your physician. Herbs. The use of herbs is a time- honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, can trigger side effects and can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, you should take herbs with care, under the supervision of a health care provider.

There are a number of factors you need to consider before deciding to make rice cakes your go- to dieting snack. ![]() Eating one meal a day to lose weight is crazy and probably extremely unhealthy. That being said, in response to this craze about Most adult women need a minimum of 1,200 calories per day and adult men 1,500 calories per day. If you are able to sustain a 1,000-calorie plan. What is a low carb diet, really? When can a low carb diet be beneficial? Should everyone follow a low carb diet? Or, can a low carb diet ruin your health? A procedural and methodological analysis of the Tabata protocol. NUTRITION & EXERCISE. Red meat consumption and. Calories. Calorie content is the first thing to look at when picking foods for your diet, because you need to eat fewer calories than you burn to lose weight. Low- calorie foods are the ideal choice. A typical plain rice cake contains just 3. Department of Agriculture advises women eat 1,6. You may need slightly less than these numbers to lose weight, but this still means one or two rice cakes would take up a very small proportion of your calorie intake. Carbohydrates. The majority of the calories in a rice cake come from carbohydrates, with a standard 9- gram cake containing 7 grams of carbs. While low- carb diets may be popular for losing weight, you still need some in your diet for it to be healthy and rice cakes can supply this. Carbs supply you with energy and can be part of any weight- loss diet. Rice cakes are far lower in total carbohydrates than a serving of rice, pasta or potatoes. Warnings. The low calorie count of rice cakes may be a bonus, but they aren't the best weight- loss food. Rice cakes have a very high glycemic index, meaning they digest quickly and spike blood sugar and insulin levels, according to Dr. Rice cakes aren't particularly filling either, notes Thats. Fit. com, meaning you're unlikely to feel satisfied just eating one or two. Some flavored rice cakes also have added sugars, salt, calories and artificial ingredients. Considerations. Choose rice cakes made with brown or whole- grain rice, as these will be more filling. Carbs on their own can make you hungry, so combine rice cakes with a protein source such as ham, low- fat cream cheese with smoked salmon, or a little peanut butter. About the Author. Note from John: this is a guest article by Tom Venuto, author of the EXCELLENT book, Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle. You can read my review on Amazon. Why do you always hear that 2 pounds per week is the maximum amount of fat you should safely lose? If you train really hard while watching calories closely shouldn? What if you want to lose fat faster? How do you explain the fast weight losses on The Biggest Loser? These are all good questions that I. With the diet marketplace being flooded every day with rapid weight loss claims, these questions desperately need and deserve some honest answers. Want to know where that 2 pounds per week rule comes from and what it really takes to burn more than 2 pounds of fat per week? Read on. Why Only 2 Pounds Per Week? The truth is, two pounds is not the maximum amount you can safely lose in a week. For example, weight losses tend to be relative to body size. The more body fat you carry, the more likely you. Therefore, we could individualize our weekly guideline a bit by recommending a goal of 1- 2 lbs of fat loss per week or up to 1% of your total weight. If you weighed 3. Body Weight Vs Body Composition. Weight loss is somewhat meaningless unless you also talk about body composition; the fat to muscle ratio, as well as water weight. Ask any wrestler about fast weight loss and he. It was easy – I just sweated it off. But once again, you can bet that a lot of that weight was water and lean tissue and in both cases, you can bet that those people put the weight right back on. The main potential advantage of any type of induction period for rapid weight loss in the first week is that a large drop on the scale is a motivational boost for many people (even if it is mostly water weight). Why do you hear so many diet and fitness professionals insist on 2 lbs a week max? Where does that number come from? Well, aside from the fact that it. The math is based on what? It gets harder as your diet progresses. My rule is, extraordinary results require extraordinary efforts. An extraordinary effort means a particularly strict diet, as well as burning more calories through training because you can only cut your calories so far from food before you. You would lose weight rapidly for as long as you could maintain that deficit (although it would slow down over time). People ask me all the time, ? Well first of all they. Then you have the high starting body weights and the large water weight loss in the beginning. After that, just do the math ? Would it even be possible if they had a job and family? If you manage to achieve the latter, it. This can help speed up the fat loss within a given amount of time. But as you begin to utilize higher intensity workouts, you have to start being on guard for overtraining or overuse injuries. Unfortunately, very low calorie dieting has its own risks in the way of lean tissue loss, slower metabolism, extreme hunger, and greater chance of weight re- gain. My approach to long term weight control is to lose weight slowly and patiently and follow a nutrition plan that is well balanced between lean protein, healthy fats and natural carbs and doesn. To lose fat, you simply create a caloric deficit by burning more and eating less (keeping the nutrient density of those calories as high as possible, of course). But to achieve the extraordinary goals such as photo- shoot- ready, super- low body fat or simply faster than average fat loss, while minimizing the risks, I often turn to a stricter cyclical low carb diet for brief . I explain this method in chapter 1. Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle (it. Essentially, this helps reduce the starvation signals your body is receiving. A high protein diet also helps by ramping up dietary thermogenesis. A high intake of greens, fibrous vegetables and low calorie fruits can help tip the energy balance equation in your favor as fibrous veggies are very low in calorie density and some of the calories in the fiber are not metabolizable. Healthy fats are added in adequate quantities, while the calorie- dense simple sugars and starchy carbs are kept to a minimum except on refeed days and after (or around) intense workouts. There. It helps with appetite control too. But always bear in mind that the faster fat loss occurs primarily as a result of the larger calorie deficit (which is easily achieved with sugars and starches minimized), not some type of . All the new- fangled dietary manipulations and high intensity training programs that really do help increase the speed of fat loss all come full circle to the calorie balance equation in the end, even if they claim their method works for other reasons and they don. My question is, are you willing to tolerate the hunger, low calories and high intensity exercise for that kind of deficit? Do you have the work ethic? Do you have the supreme level of dietary restraint necessary to stop yourself from binging and putting the weight right back on when that aggressive diet is over? Or would you rather do it in a more moderate way where you. Is that really so slow or is that an astounding transformation? Personally, I think short- term thinking and the pursuit of quick fixes are the worst diseases of our generation. If you want to be one of those . But when you set your goals, it might be wise to remember that old fable of the tortoise and the hare, and buyer beware if you go shopping for a fast weight loss program in today. Healing the Kidneys with Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)Sodium bicarbonate is not only an excellent agent for natural chemotherapy, bringing as it does higher O2 levels through increased alkalinity to the cells, it is also one of the most basic medicines we have for kidney disease. New research by British scientists at the Royal London Hospital shows that sodium bicarbonate can dramatically slow the progress of chronic kidney disease. The findings have been published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Bicarbonate is a truly strong universal concentrated nutritional medicine that works effectively in many clinical situations that we would not normally think of. It is a prime emergency room and intensive care medicine that can save a personâs life in a heartbeat and it is also a supermarket item that you can take right off the shelf and use for more things than one can imagine . SK Hariachar, a nephrologist who oversees the Renal Hypertension Unit in Tampa Florida stated, upon seeing the research on bicarbonate and kidney disease, âI am glad to see confirmation of what we have known for so long. Not only that, we have the added information that some people already on dialysis can reverse their condition with the use of sodium bicarbonateâ. John, a dialysis technician at the same center as Dr. Hariachar, who used to be on dialysis himself for 2 years as a result of kidney failure, had his kidneys miraculously start functioning to the point where dialysis was no longer needed. He states that he was prescribed oral doses of sodium bicarbonate throughout his treatment, and still takes it daily to prevent recurrences of kidney failure. Hariachar says that not everyone will be helped by taking bicarbonate but still maintains that, . The pancreas is primarily responsible for the production of enzymes and bicarbonate necessary for normal digestion of food. Bicarbonate is so important for protecting the kidneys that even the kidneys get into the act of producing bicarbonate and now we know the common denominator between diabetes and kidney disease. When the body is hit with reductions in bicarbonate output by these two organs,â acid conditions build and then entire body physiology begins to go south. Likewise when acid buildup outstrips these organs normal bicarbonate capacity cellular deterioration begins. The kidneys alone produce about two hundred and fifty grams (about half a pound) of bicarbonate per day in an attempt to neutralize acid in the body. The kidneys monitor and control the acidity or âacid- baseâ (p. H) balance of the blood. If the blood is too acidic, the kidney makes bicarbonate to restore the bloods p. H balance. If the blood is too alkaline, then the kidney excretes bicarbonate into the urine to restore the balance. This excess acid, or acidosis, is considered to contribute to many diseases and to contribute to the aging process. Acidosis occurs often when the body cannot produce enough bicarbonate ions (or other alkaline compounds) to neutralize the acids in the body formed from metabolism and drinking highly acid drinks like Coke, Pepsi and we are even seeing reports on bottled mineral water being way too acidic. Acid- buffering by means of base supplementation is one of the major roles of dialysis. Bicarbonate concentration in the dialysate (solution containing water and chemicals (electrolytes) that passes through the artificial kidney to remove excess fluids and wastes from the blood, also called âbath.â) should be personalized in order to reach a midweek pre- dialysis serum bicarbonate concentration of 2. Bicarbonate dialysis, unlike acetate- free biofiltration, triggers mediators of inflammation and apoptosis. Eating meat and dairy products may increase the risk of prostate cancer, research suggests. Conversely mineral deficiencies are another reason and when you combine high protein intake with decreasing intake of minerals you have a disease in the making through lowering of p. H into highly acidic conditions. When protein breaks down in our bodies they break into strong acids. Unless a treatment actually removes acid toxins from the body and increases oxygen, water, and nutrients most medical interventions come to naught. These acids must be excreted by the kidneys because they contain sulfur, phosphorus or nitrogen which cannot break down into water and carbon dioxide to be eliminated as the weak acids are. In their passage through the kidneys these strong acids must take a basic mineral with them because in this way they are converted into their neutral salts and donât burn the kidneys on their way out. This would happen if these acids were excreted in their free acid form. Substituting a sodium bicarbonate solution for saline infusion prior to administration of radiocontrast material seems to reduce the incidence of nephropathy. Kennedy. American Medical Association. Bicarbonate ions neutralize the acid conditions required for chronic inflammatory reactions. Hence, sodium bicarbonate is of benefit in the treatment of a range of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Sodium bicarbonate is a well studied and used medicine with known effects. Sodium bicarbonate is effective in treating poisonings or overdoses from many chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs by negating their cardiotoxic and neurotoxic effects. Comparison of cancer tissue with healthy tissue from the same person shows that the cancer tissue has a much higher concentration of toxic chemicals, pesticides, etc. Sodium bicarbonate injection is indicated in the treatment of metabolic acidosis, which may occur in severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, and circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, extracorporeal circulation of blood, cardiac arrest and severe primary lactic acidosis. The acid/alkaline balance is one of the most overlooked aspects of medicine. In general, the American public is heavily acid, excepting vegetarians, and even their bodies have to face increasing levels of toxic exposure, which help turn the body to acidic p. H conditions. Department of Chemistry and the Marine Science Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, California, U. S. A. Human and animal reports suggest that hypertonic sodium bicarbonate may be effective therapy for numerous agents possessing sodium channel blocking properties, including cocaine, quinidine, procainamide, flecainide, mexiletine, bupivacaine, and others.
